Two-cents:

He gives essentially the right answer, but seems to read into Romans 1 the idea that we know God by observing creation. It is the "invisible things of him FROM [not by or via] the creation of the world are clearly seen" that render men without excuse. Invisible and eternal truths cannot be inferred by observation. But, of course, that's not what Paul is suggesting either by the word "creation" or by the idea of seeing. Seeing in Scripture is more often than not intellection, not sensation. A good example of this is Jesus who said; "because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand."

Paul is discussing the apriori in man, a point he reiterates again in Chapter 2 concerning the law written on men's minds. Koukl gets this right, but, again seems to infer too much from Romans 1 in the first part. Paul was not an evidentialist and while sloppy handling of the first chapter of Romans is routine, there is no reason why one is required to subscribe to Aquinas' attempt to justify Aristotle by this misreading of Scripture.

Hey Roger,

Actually, Gabe Martini attempted the "multi-sense" argument with regard to my first post "Calvin Wouldn't Agree." http://jude3.wordpress.com/2008/01/22/calvin-wouldnt-agree/#comments

Gabe said:

Are you saved?

Yes, in some sense. If we presume upon a number of things, “objectively.”

But you haven’t “been saved” in the full sense of the word yet. You are still living, and the resurrection has not occured. You’re not saved yet, and still you are “saved” in some sense.

He, however, denies that they were of them, though they had assumed the name of believers, as chaff though mixed with wheat on the same floor cannot yet be deemed wheat. For if they had been of us He plainly declares that those who fell away had never been members of the Church… Since the Church is like a threshing-floor, the chaff must be blown away that the pure wheat may remain. This is what God does, when he casts out hypocrites from the Church, for he then cleanses it from refuse and filth.

Great post! I can’t believe you haven’t gotten the typical FV response yet: “That’s true in one sense, but in another sense…” blah, blah, blah.

Hey Mark,

Well, well, well . . . They edited Jim Jordan's original response. I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

In any case, I assure you and everyone else that I copied and pasted the comment just as it's quoted here the day Mr. Jordan posted it. But hey . . . speaking of snakes . . .

Hi,

The link to the Jordan quote is either incorrect or else they edited the comment. Regardless, I remember Jordan writing, “It won’t happen again.” But I suppose it all depends on what the word “again” means.
